Summer is here, and always remember to relax, have fun, and read a good book! On a more critical note, this summer will be a time to create initiatives and make calls to "organize and mobilize" around recent funding cuts to resources important to our community. The library's leadership has been instrumental in revitalizing its role as a community anchor, particularly in the face of financial challenges. Community Engagement and Programming: Under current leadership, ECPL has made major improvements to its Children's Department, including the addition of interactive technology and robotics kits to engage young learners. The library also hosts programs like the East Side Chess Club, offers free snacks for children, and provides access to a creative Makerspace—demonstrating a strong commitment to enriching experiences for youth and families. Advocacy Amid Funding Challenges: Community support is vital to advancing the library’s mission. The FRIENDS of the East Cleveland Public Library—a dedicated volunteer group—champion the library through advocacy and by organizing key programs such as summer reading, mentorship opportunities, ECCAMP, and the monthly concert series. In light of statewide funding cuts, including reductions to the Public Library Fund from Ohio’s general revenue, library leaders are working closely with policymakers to highlight the vital role libraries play in education, enrichment, and community support. Looking Ahead: The Board of Trustees and library leadership remain committed to a proactive approach in community engagement and advocacy as we navigate ongoing funding challenges. Moving forward, our focus will stay centered on delivering 5-star services and programming, advocating for sustainable funding, fostering collaboration, and deepening community involvement—all core to the ECPL’s mission. For more information on upcoming programs and ways to support the library, visit the East Cleveland Public Library website. *See page 17 for ways to advocate for the library.
