Documentary Screening
Three Butterflies, LLC hosts a screening of the Cleveland portion of a documentary produced and directed by Leah C.K. Lewis titled Black Buckeyes: A Tale of Two Cities on Saturday, December14 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. While the event is free and open to the public, a donation is requested to support the balance of the production, which will take place in Cincinnati.
Black Buckeyes looks at the ways African Americans in the great State of Ohio, particularly in Cleveland and Cincinnati, have evolved since the days of chattel slavery and the Great Migration to the present, while striving to achieve social and economic empowerment while combating poverty, police brutality, functional literacy, and the whole gamut of systemic oppression. The cast includes attorneys Carolyn Allen and James Robenalt; voter advocates Erika Anthony, Devonta Dickey, and Jennifer Lumpkin; poet Ali Black; photographer Donald Black; literacy advocates Margaret Bernstein and Rhonda Crowder; consultants Evelyn Burnett and Mordecai Cargill; Noah Foster representing the youth; artist Gwendolyn Garth; health disparities activist Yvonka Hall; tech educator Sonya Pryor-Jones; photographer, poet, and musician Vince Robinson; and Esterlee Shy, Imam Mutawaf Shaheed, and Gloria Ware who are descendants of Margaret McQueen a woman who ran away from slavery in Parkersburg, WV; Joan Southgate who walked 519 miles of the Underground Railroad; Danielle Syndor who works in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Cleveland and serves as president of the local NAACP; and LaDosha Wright a beauty advocate. The primary crew includes Leah C.K. Lewis, Executive Producer and Director; Eric Siler, Producer; and Thomas Stumpf, Directory of Photography and Editor. The Char and Chuck Fowler Family Foundation, SPACES Urgent Art Fund and the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture provided support.
